Shalane Flanagan
2010 ING New York City Marathon Race, 2nd Place
In her marathon debute, Shalane finished just 20 seconds behind the winner, Edna Kipagat of Kenya. Her runner-up finish is the best by an American women since Kim Jones finished second in 1990. With her 2nd place finish, Shalane also becomes the 2010 USA Women's Marathon Champion.

Shalane’s bronze medal is only the second time in U.S. history that an American female athlete has medaled in a long distance event at the Olympics (longer than 800 m). The first was Lynn Jennings, who earned a bronze medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
